The visions of John cannot be understood to be in chronological order. Each vision should be considered independent of the others. Some are a repetition of others. Recapitulation is a necessary tool in understanding the Apocalypse.

John the Apostle knew that. He also knew Jesus and the churches. He also knew about the followers of the Baptist in Ephesus.

Especially a “thousand years” when they reigned with Christ. Not the “reign of Christ” which will get over 5 million hits on the internet. You get 666. 46 is the number Gibbon used. 46 years after the Hijri year Constantinople was attacked. A date is a mark. Gibbon notes the problems with dates. More versions calculate the number 666.

A consistent interpretation. Numbers are one of the few things all 60 English translations of the bible agree on. They all agree on “a thousand years”, 666, “ten horns”, and “seven heads” . Can we find historical events that have all these numbers in a meaningful way? Start with the biggest number. A thousand years.
