a history of the bible

A Canon

a redaction at the turn of the fifth century.  Jerome defined the bible when he finished the Vulgate which would become the official bible of the Church. It contains the oldest existing copy of the Apocalypse.  We can only speculate on what it looked like before that time based on other older existing documents.

A Christian Empire

a bishop extraordinaire was in Ephesus to replace seven corrupt bishops at the beginning of the fifth century.  John Chrysostom, who never quoted the Apocalypse, could not ignore what John the Apostle may have left there.  At that time Jerome could have been looking for a reliable copy of the Apocalypse.  He was finishing the Vulgate.

a reason to believe

A Reasonable Explanation

a history of the Apocalypse.  John Chrysostom was in Ephesus when Jerome was finishing the Vulgate.  It would become the official bible of the Church.  It would confirm once and for all that the Apocalypse belonged in the bible.  Before that the jury was out.  Chrysostom was just one of those who didn’t accept the Apocalypse.  What could be the reason?

Chrysostom

A Third John

who also am your brother was in Ephesus not too far from Patmos in the year 401 when Jerome was finishing the Vulgate 405.  The big question was whether it should include the Apocalypse.  Jerome had to be convinced it was written by John the Apostle.  Chrysostom would also need that proof.  He had three months to get it.

A Commentary

by Victorinus modified by Jerome who was not happy with it.  What he added and/or edited is not clear.  It is possible that Victorinus was looking at a copy of the original Apocalypse and Jerome was not aware of this.  This would also explain why so many were convinced it was not written by John the Apostle who may have added the churches at a later date.

A Reliable Copy

of the Apocalypse.  We know that John Chrysostom was in Ephesus when Jerome was finishing the Vulgate.  Who in Ephesus could be trusted?  Certainly not the seven bishops Chrysostom was replacing.  Jerome knew all the major players and must have known Chrysostom was someone you could trust.
