A John –
A canon that only considers apostles. So why did they think John wasn’t the apostle? The apostle wouldn’t use his name five times. He wouldn’t say lamb more times then Jesus. The Baptist would since he didn’t know Jesus was the Lamb. The apostle knew who “bare record” and Jesus.

A City of God –
A new bible translated by Jerome precedes Augustine’s commentary on the Apocalypse in The City of God. Prior to the Vulgate many believed the Apocalypse did not belong in the bible. This was settled once and for all by Jerome who had the authority to define the bible. We still wonder about who wrote it and when.

A Church History that includes six of the seven churches that John wrote to but Eusebius never associates them with the Apocalypse. Victorinus doesn’t even mention them. Is it possible there is a version of the Apocalypse that doesn’t include the seven churches? It could be a reasonable explanation for what we are looking at.

A conjecture that it was written by John the Baptist was first suggested by Josephine Massyngbaerde Ford. She is not the first to suggest multiple authors of the Apocalypse. Peter Vischer did suggest it was “originally a purely Jewish composition”. It has also been suggested that it was originally written in Hebrew. That’s the truth.

Chrysostom is the only significant John during the sixth dynasty and he was in Ephesus when Jerome was finishing the Vulgate. Someone had to verify that John the Apostle wrote the Apocalypse to get it in the bible.

A book with three writers named John: John who bare record, John to the seven churches, and John who am your brother. Lots of unsettled questions: Who?, When?, and now Where? Only the third John admits to being on the Isle of Patmos. Eusebius mentions six of the seven churches but never associates them with the Apocalypse. Victorinus only mentions the seven churches Paul wrote to. So why not speculate?
