He was in Ephesus at the beginning of the fifth century and could have said five are fallen, one is, and the other is not yet come if the Roman Empire had seven dynasties. Jerome was finishing his Vulgate at this time and may have needed confirmation that John the Apostle did indeed write the Apocalypse.
