A Canon
A redaction at the turn of the fifth century. Jerome defined the bible when he finished the Vulgate which would become the official bible of the Church. It contains the oldest existing copy of the Apocalypse. We can only speculate on what it looked like before that time based on other older existing documents.

A Cause
A because to answer why. The child’s first question. Why? There has to be a reason. Why the Apocalypse? Why does John identify himself three times in the first chapter? Because. A child won’t accept that answer. A reasonable explanation is just conjecture or speculation. Why?
A Working Hypothesis
A lack of agreement about who and when forces speculation on what might be. It has been suggested that John the Baptist wrote the first version of the Apocalypse. Is it reasonable? Does it make sense? The “wise shall understand” None of the wicked shall. Be reasonable.
A Conjecture
A reasonable explanation to address what is not settled. Who wrote it? When was it written? Why was the Apocalypse written? The Apocalypse has “a decidedly Jewish complexion” and it was suggested that John the Baptist was the first writer. Others have suggested multiple writers.

A Book That Is A Mystery
J. Massyngberde Ford may have been the first to suggest John the Baptist was the first writer of the Apocalypse. She is not the first to suggest multiple writers. Others suggested that it was first written in Hebrew. Most agree that there is little agreement regarding the Apocalypse. So we continue to speculate.
A Third John
A place called Patmos. This is all we know. Everything else is speculation or interpretation. Is yours better than the others? Is your bible better than the others? Do they have anything in common? Numbers. Somehow they get the numbers right. We also have logic and reason to make sense of them.
A Radical View That Is Consistent With History
A reasonable explanation. An unsettled mystery. Who, When, What, and Why? Especially the Why but the Who might explain all the others. John the Baptist preparing the way for the Way, the Truth, and the Light. The first coming. The Lamb of God. The time was near for this prophecy.
