A preparation. We should be preparing for the second coming but at the time the Apocalypse was first written they could have been preparing for the first coming. Not a common belief but a few have proposed this as a possibility. It is not unreasonable to consider this.

that the time is near. The time was near for the first coming 2000 years ago. The time is now near for the second. All the signs are there. Are you ready? You may now have time to reflect. Use it. There is not much future left.
A Conjecture
it is a reasonable explanation for the questions surrounding the Apocalypse. The original was about the first coming hence the time was near. Later in Ephesus there were John the Baptist followers who didn’t know Jesus. John the Apostle was well aware of this.
A Prophecy
made two thousand years ago. This was not about the end times! It was about the first coming. His “time is at hand” was two thousand years ago. John the Baptist knew that and he was preparing the way for the “Lamb of God”. You will find the word “lamb” 27 times in the Apocalypse. This suggests John the Baptist wrote the first version.
